STAR WARS D-0:
BRANDING & PACKAGING

I led branding and packaging design for the D-O Interactive Droid, a premium animatronic toy released alongside Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. Working closely with marketing, product design, engineering, and the mobile app team, I translated the droid’s complex interactive features into clear, engaging packaging while guiding the project through licensor approvals and final production.

The process

To translate D-0’s capabilities into clear packaging communication, I collaborated closely with cross-functional teams across product design, engineering, and the mobile app group to understand how the droid moved, responded, and interacted with the companion app. I also partnered with the marketing team to align on key messaging and ensure the packaging clearly communicated the product’s primary features and play patterns to consumers.

Using these insights, and working with the Creative Manager, I developed the creative direction for graphics and messaging that highlighted the droid’s interactive functionality and personality. Throughout the process, I partnered with outside vendors to execute layout and communication graphics based on my direction, while navigating internal reviews and Lucasfilm licensor approvals. I also worked closely with production partners to refine the packaging through final mechanicals and print specifications, ensuring the design was successfully brought through production and ready for final manufacturing.

THE RESULT

The final packaging successfully communicated the product’s advanced interactive functionality while maintaining the premium cinematic feel expected from a Star Wars product launch. The design helped translate complex animatronic and app-driven features into a clear, engaging on-shelf experience for both collectors and younger fans.
